UPDATED:

The winner of an 8GB Tiki God Mimobot in our first Giveaway of the Week is army wife Shirley Brondum (@sbrondum)! Shirley recommended @Skipinc as the a non-profit who uses Twitter brilliantly. Here’s what Shirley had to say:

“#ilovemrtweet I believe @skipinc uses twitter brilliantly as a non-profit organization because not only do they send care packages to our troops, but they constantly use twitter to keep us in the “know” of things in the media which are military related. For example, I am a Army wife who’s husband is serving a second term overseas, but this time it’s much different. This year we have a newborn son, which makes it very difficult for me to be able to send much needed items overseas to my husband.” (Click here to continue reading…)

Penwith Radio using twitter for local council election results straight from the announcements.

#ilovemrtweet I believe @skipinc uses twitter brilliantly as a non-profit organization because not only do they send care packages to our troops, but they constantly use twitter to keep us in the "know" of things in the media which are military related. For example, I am a Army wife who's husband is serving a second term overseas, but this time it's much different. This year we have a newborn son, which makes it very difficult for me to be able to send much needed items overseas to my husband. In contacting @skipinc, I informed them of my situation and they responded with such kindness and thankfulness, that it brought me to tears. I felt as if such a load had been taken off of my chest with not being able to provide, but they helped me so quick and offered such nice words to keep me going and hanging on. As I write this, it is very difficult for me to not cry, but please consider them as the organization to follow and be proud of, if not for the winner of this contest. Thank you for the forum to publicize @skipinc!
  • hungry_traveler
@nyphil 'cause they have an extensive educational program for children as well as adults. They tweet factoids from their archives and give us heads up on future programs.
  • @AfterShare
We are a great concept of formerly homeless partnering with staff at the shelter and giving back. Plus we used Twitter to replace two washing machines and now a refrigerator at the shelter...saving$$$!!!!!
  • Tweetforeric
  • @aiesecintl
  • @12for12K they are a charitable movement that is based on raising funds through social media. I found out about them through Twitter... so I joined!
This month they are raising funds for Unicef. It's a very simple concept and I still don't understand why EVERYONE doesn't get involved!!
  • ifilmbands
The movement of #Eric has been both uplifting and a tremendous thing to watch. With rockstars like Trent Reznor, Tom Morello, Dave Navarro and everyone in their respective camps joining it, when they darn sure didn't have to, and lending support to someone they've never met and raising a million? is it a million now? if not it's very close, to save someone's life, yea. And there is a foundation set up for him. Easily takes the Twitter award.
    Signed,

  • The United Way of Greater St. Louis does a great job. Their Twitter name is @UnitedWaySTL
  • @amnesty

    i want a mimobot!
  • my favorite group is @yogabear . they were able to use twitter to spread the word about a contest for nonprofits to win money via blog posts. they are doing great work w/ yoga teachers and cancer victims. go @yogabear!
  • Honestly, I have yet to see any use twitter properly but I #blamedrewscancer for that. =P j/k
  • I've participated in that one myself and I #blamedrewscancer too :) That was a particularly funny one and very creative to turn it into something positive.
  • Crista
Check out @BettertheWorld. Their whole launch started on Twitter... @seedgirl
  • Sounds really good! Thanks Crista.
  • Simple... AlxesLemonade
  • #ilovemrtweet I've been very impressed with @treeplanting and the overall social networking prowess of the Arbor Day Foundation. The Arbor Day Foundation might be green, but when it comes to getting the word out they are all business. It's a non-profit everyone can dig and their staff and friends really help grow an appreciation for average, ordinary, everyday trees without over self-promotion. If you plant a tree, or save a tree, their job is well done.
  • michael goodman
UNHCR Refugees they help provide vital aid and protection to the forceibly diplaced around the world if you can't donate they have other ways you can help
  • @Kiva is a great non-profit that uses twitter very well
  • Jared Miller
I like @komenforthecure . Their twitter keeps followers up to date on current walks/races for the cure and ways people can donate time and money. A very important cause that has affected my life through people I love.
  • @ftmyerssoupktch uses twitter to raise hunger awareness. Area of passion is childhood hunger
  • I'd like to nominate @Not_For_Sale. Incredible org, and you'd approve of their tweet vs. link count!
  • I like the way @nonprofitorgs serves as a gateway Twitterfeed of meta-nonprofits.
  • @UnitetoFight
They're fans of the New Kids On The Block who organize breast cancer fund-raisers (one of the New Kids lost his mom to the disease).
  • @rotary
  • Dave H
My vote goes to @planetpositive - they are a not for profit organisation and they tweet articles about the environment and carbon impacts - a great example of a company using twitter for the greater good!
  • @urbantastic (www.urbantastic.com) does a good job with using Twitter to help promote local micro-volunteering opportunities as well as connecting people who want to do good things with organizations who need help.
  • @12for12k - brilliant use of the twitter community to raise money for a different charity each month
  • Deirdre B Pride
nonprofitorgs has 10,790 followers. Their bio is: The mission of this Twitter profile is to serve as a portal to all nonprofit organizations on Twitter [by only following nonprofit organizations].

Thus, it channels non-profit organitations to exist on twitter together. Giving the donator the option to choose which organiation they want to give their participation to. This also makes the donator feel that their donations are secure and protected by the organization as well as twitter.
  • DaveTheCompGuy
I'd like to nominate @fcedmonton, the Full Circles Network - here they tweet out classified ad listings that have free giveaways, so people can pass on the stuff they don't need. Often, people will post an old fridge or dishwasher, and it's picked up within hours by someone that really needs it.
  • chrishill
@simplyloveproject they are actually using twitter to change lives through intentional acts of love in communities all over the world.
  • Shoshauna_m

This website http://www.aatimes.org.au/ lists Alcoholic Anonymous meetings and special events in the state of Victoria, Australia.
Each day at 6am (local time), the site automatically tweets the special events that are scheduled for today. At 9am it tweets the events that are scheduled for tomorrow. And at various other times later in the day it tweets upcoming events for 6days time, 10days time and 30days time.
The tweets are obviously only of interest to a small number of followers (AA members in Victoria), but I think it is a cool use of Twitter, especially since it's done programmatically using the Twitter API.
  • Gotta be the Natural History Museum in New York. The whale on the ceiling twitters - what an inventive way to use twitter to reach your audience! @NatHistoryWhale.
  • National Public Radio has been doing a great some with Twitter, just as it's mastered various other forms of social media and web communications. Not only do their individual shows have tweet streams, but there are specialized accounts for individual topics AND their anchors and reporters give their Twitter accounts on air. They're also live-tweeting events, shows, and more. I follow a bunch of other media outlets via Twitter and most of them are either boring RSS-stream type deals done by robots or they are completely unprofessional, run by undertrained interns. NPR outshines them all.
  • Ellen Swercewski
I think @spiritjump is an outstanding non-profit offering help to all cancer patients by engaging us to become spiritjumpers and notifying us via twitter on who needs help, e.g., Nancy Jo Mosley just the last few days. Only been on twitter about a month, but got engaged by their profile and tweets immediately.
  • @DariusGoesWest Darius has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. He and a group of friends drove across the country with the goal of having Darius' wheelchair customized on MTV's Pimp My Ride and made a film documenting their journey. Now they have launched a new initiative to sell one million DVDs in one year. The year-end date is Darius's birthday, Sept. 27, 2009. Every DVD raises $17 for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research, as well as awareness wherever it is screened. Twitter is one of the tools that they are using to spread the word. Be sure to check out the website! http://www.dariusgoeswest.org/
  • Julie Foster
I have been really impressed with @NEAQ that's the New England Aquarium in Boston, MA. They post a lot of videos about their latest research to keep all their visitors and fans up to date. Their tweets are always very informative...not spammy like some non profit groups are.
  • @marylandzoo does a great job with their feed. They're constantly posting near real time pictures of events and random zoo happenings.

@natlaquarium (national aquarium in baltimore) does a decent job, but it feels more like advertising than communication. Something that @marylandzoo handles very well.
  • carogonza
I have to say @komenforthecure. They continually tweet excellent information. And not only info but they keep you interested by posting links ro pictures and events they are holding. They rally take advantage of Twitter to keep their followers abreast of their doings. Plus, it's a great organization.
  • John Kissinger
The Grewater Milwaukee Committee uses twitter the best. Prez Julia Taylor tweets to her members about all sorts of puiblic policy issues,as wll as regular old stuff. She can use twitter to muster up a letter writing campiagn, or get everyone to the meeting on Wednesday..She and her staff do a great job of using Twitter
  • TheZikulan does a great job at keeping the users informed
  • joann jozaitis
    American Red Cross
  • It's been mentioned here a couple of times already and I have to go with it as well - 12for12k.

No superstars involved, no big names, just a collection of people that care immensely. 12 different charities throughout the year, from the big guys like UNICEF to the little guys like Stop the Silence.

Danny Brown and his supporters have really united Twitter and used it superbly. They raised $13,000 in 12 hours from a Tweetathon; over $1,000 in three hours from a virtual PJ party (which even got Guy Kawasaki involved) and they have a lot of goodwill and love from most Twitter users.

There are some great charities mentioned here, and I think that's the key difference. 12for12k isn't even a charity - it's more a call to action on behalf of charities that has so far raised almost $40,000. They're showing how Twitter can really be used.

  • HawaiianLion
MAZON (@stophunger) has done a lot to promote awareness of hunger, and to raise money to fight it. They even have had donors who gave money for each new follower within a certain time period.
  • Rebekah Thornton
@percythepigeon is the best not for profit on Twitter. He is funny, he works for BullyingUK and is spreading the word that Bullying can affect lives permanently. He needs some Twitter recognition for the job he is doing.
  • The Diocese of Westminster use twitter successfully:
    http://twitter.com/RCWestminster
    http://www.rcdow.org.uk
  • Vanessa
    I'd have to say @amnesty
  • @redcrossny, not only do they post "the usual" announcements, but also the incidents that they have responded to. Who know they were so busy?!?
  • Rob
Setanta are a non-profit organisation, but that probably wouldn't count!
  • I'd go with @w3c, for those that don't know, they are the standards group behind things such as HTML and CSS.

They've got a good team behind their account and through being witty have recently hit the front page of Reddit and Digg. So far they've only just started to use it but going by their activity so far they'll be good at using Twitter.
  • The people I work for Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer research are on twitter, http://twitter.com/rallyfoundation They are an awesome group of individuals fighting for cancer for so many young children in American, they have raised so much money for so many families and have seen many healed or cured because of their countless efforts.
  • @stcu is a credit union that tweets with a cool, friendly voice. (Especially considering that they're in the normally beige Financial Industry...)
  • @bear2care2009 is doing great things for children with life threatening illnesses
  • KittKlaiss
@NACHC - the National Association of Community Health Centers. They not only have very informative tweets in the organizational account, but several of the officers have accounts, making contact very easy!
  • got to be @realnickgriffin - glad to see someone making some amusing tongue-in-cheek tweets re: the BNP's recent publicity.
  • @bbb_us - The Better Business Bureau tweets scam warnings and tips for protecting yourself. It's one that I not only follow, but find worthy of subscribing to the RSS so I don't miss anything.

  • mark a williams

    @stophunger
  • AbsolutQueer
@bullyinguk - inventive use of twitter to not only raise money but awareness and linking into Twitter really well.
  • @die_markeza
It may be from Mexico, but I definitely think that @noviolenciamx use Twitter brilliantly. They motivate to denounce violence acts (at all levels of violence) and promote different types of movements against narcotraffic and insecurity.
On the left of their page they say: "Twitter can be an important tool to combat violence in Mexico." (Spanish)
I think they are really attached to the Mexican problematics and what they are pursuing is not unattainable.
  • Lake Ontario Waterkeeper! Known as @LOWWaterkeeper and @waterkeepermark and @krystynt and so many more ... It's a Canadian environmental charity that uses Twitter in a whole bunch of ways. We let our members know about breaking news (like beach closures), keep our operations transparent and honest by showing people what we're working on all the time, recognize the famous and unknown heroes who contribute to the cause, solicit song suggests for our weekly radio show, and more. We also use hashtags like #SDFM to keep conversations alive about our digital music project, www.swimdrinkfishmusic.com. Also, our two communications staffers are at a conference talking about Twitter RIGHT NOW :)
  • MonikaMiddays (representing Colorado Public Radio) Monica makes best use of radio and Twitter best practices by creating compelling and alluring promotion for the music and special events about to be heard on her air shift.
  • Sipster
@ISF They provide free wifi for the communities in Montreal, QC.

  • BonnieGlick
I would have to say that charity:water uses twitter the best. From the Twestival in the spring, to the continued updates on where all that money raised went... it really is wonderful as a contributor to this charity to see the finished wells and pics of all the people and villages helped.
  • Jonathan
Shout out to anti-corruption watchdogs @globalintegrity which uses Twitter not to ask for money (gasp!) but to actually share information. How novel!

The amazing Amy Sample Ward is behind much of the tweets and she hits all the right buttons for NetSquared's follower community on Twitter.

Mr Tweet - please take a look at @innovationmcr from Manchester England. the twitter feed from non-profit Manchester Knowledge Capital

It picks up news on innovation and enterprise development in the local economy from a Google news feed, and RTs words of wisdom from leading international thinkers.
  • #ilovemrtweet I think http://twitter.com/childrenscancer uses their Twitter brilliantly. Our children are out future and with the increasing number of children with cancer, their non profit organization helps promote awareness.

  • @ RickAlanisJr
I believe that would be @VOSD They Have used Twitter to help grow thier congregation and keep them updated on all upcoming events, Victory Outreach of San Diego is a ministry focused on reaching out to the unreachable, unloveable and untouchable. They bring them in and accept them for they are and take them in as family. They have taken many of these people who at one time were a problem to society and now turned them into part of the solution.
  • I must have this one. It is just like the evil tiki statue from Brady Bunch season 4, episode #74 that brings crazy bad luck to the family.

As a fan of Mr. Tweet and a caring human being, I feel it only right that I volunteer to be the winner of this USB giveaway. The sacrafices I make to prevent bad things to happening all over the internet. And then yes I plan on reliving my youth and love for the brady bunch every time i see it.
  • Twitter activities to support @Twestival and charity: water were some of the best I have seen. Strong community involvement, multiple points of contact and constant updates. The campaign raised more than $250k and the first well was drilled in April 2009. It also helped introduce me to new people on twitter and start following new blogs.
  • amanda2610
I would like to nominate Cancer Research UK, their tweets are interesting and informative.
  • Dinara
