What is YOUR use for Twitter?

Note: Given that our goal is to help YOU find (and be found) by the right people to achieve your objectives, we want to understand what you want to get from using Twitter.

Please share what YOUR use for Twitter is, and we will feature the most meaningful comments to share it with everyone! =)

How people use Twitter is often a hot button topic – the most heated discussions typically center whether it is good to have more followers (or better followers), whether it is good to “follow back” everyone, whether you should tweet more than 5 times a day.

While we understand why these arguments happen, we believe there really is no right or wrong answer - it all depends on what YOU are using Twitter for!

Whether it is doubling clients for your local coffee shop, fighting breast cancer, or finding a fellow cat lovers, or distributing industry information there really is no one way of using Twitter, and that is what is so great about it.

My Goals: I use Twitter to discover potential collaborators for MrTweet, as well as to connect with smart people who share similar interests.

Who I follow: People who either share links or hold conversations in finance, recommendation systems, and human psychology.

For example, I was really happy when I was able to find Tom Conrad, who is the CTO of Pandora being the second on my MrTweet recommended list!

2nd on my MrTweet Recommendation. Yay!

Also, I look for folks who work in companies which could benefit from either knowing about the kind of work we do at MrTweet, and/or our areas of expertise around discovery.

When do i follow back? I do not follow everyone back like KrisColvin does, but I normally follow back after 2 or more interactions have taken place.

Meeting @HamiltonUlmer for coffee after a few such interactions

A great example here is @hamiltonulmer. He started following me first, and he replied to a couple of my tweets about geek stuff like recommendation engines with some great links. Not only am I following him back, I am also meeting him for coffee soon!

What do I ReTweet? I am not what you might consider a “generous” ReTweeter like @Zaibatsu, who is a great link sharing machine!

Recommendation for Reg. Completely agree.

However, I retweet whenever I see little known articles or quotes being shared, because I like to think I am adding value to the world by highlighting less known, but cool stuff.

This is just MY own use case, and I do not think i am doing anything “right or wrong”. Everyone has different usages for Twitter, and it is important to recognize that.

What is YOUR goals for Twitter, and how do you use this great new communication tool?

  • Thanks Mr. Tweet for your service and a great blog!
My use of Twitter has evolved over time. I began to Tweet as a way to market my business. I was uber cautious and professional.
    Now, I'm just myself!
Today I rely on it to inspire and be inspired. To connect and be connected. To learn to share. I am so grateful for all the Tweeple out there.
  • Shannon,

Thanks for the kind words for Mr Tweet! My use has evolved as well. I still use Twitter to track areas of interests (music, news, marketing, etc) - but as I connect with people, your right, the ability to just be yourself increases. And there's always something funny or insightful to respond to or pass along!
  • Yes! and you are so welcome!
  • Hi,

My goal for twitter is to add as much value to the Universe as I possibly can while connecting with others. I am not focused on my number of followers but rather what I am offering them.

I also aim to follow people with differing interests. I receive most of my "specialized" knowledge from specific blogs or web research. Twitter provides me with a more rounded view of what's going on in the world.

    Thanks for sharing your insight.

    Ryan

  • That's a great idea, following folks with differing interests - broad horizons, that's fantastic.

Keep adding value to the universe,

For the MrTweet team, - C
  • My Goal is to meet new people on Twitter, so that when I land in a city I'll always have Free tour guides at my finger tips! :P
  • I use twitter to communicate and maintain 'connectivity' with friends/peers/associates/customers, and to announce new content which I have posted online.

Plus the odd re-tweet of very worthwhile stuff.
  • Some use it to tweet, but i use it to bark.
  • To spread exciting and fun links, plus add a bit of randomness to others and myself (it's fun to think out little tweets).
  • Hooray for randomness!

On behalf of the Mr Tweet team, -C
  • Lainer
Random blurting for my ASPERGER'S. Joking. Random blurts for no particular reason. I guess it's like throwing shit against the tide. No one hears.
  • Randomness is becoming a theme! And people hear.

On behalf of the Mr Tweet team, - C

I dictate my actions, thoughts and desires through members of the family who type up my tweets. I am a rescue cat who has tweeting anipals and their owners from all over the world. Sometimes it's about support, sometimes responsible ownership, sometimes championing good causes, but mainly it is about tuna, prowling and naps.
  • Emmy, that is very cool. Using whimsey to tackle serious issues. That's a job for a cat!
  • I'm currently using to twitter to make a film entitle 140, where by, through twitter, I will co-ordinate 140 filmmakers in 140 locations around the world to shoot 140 seconds simultaneously.

So far I have 51 filmmakers worldwide and I am looking for more. When I have all 140 I will set a time and a date and then through twitter I will call action and we will all film at the same time.

For more info you can go to www.frankkelly.blogpot.com or www.140faq.blogspot.com.

What a cool idea, you should advertise on the radio
  • Amazing! Keep us posted.

I have found Twitter to be a good aide in remembering that there is a world out there. I use it to keep up on my favorite topics. I am a science nerd and there are many Twitterers out there who help me keep up with what is happening out there. I also like to read but don't necessarily have the time to slog through a listing if new books coming out and when, so I follow my favorite authors and they tell me when their stuff is coming out. I also like to be entertained and so follow those who have interesting things to say. All in all, Twitter helps me keep in contact with a world I normally ignore. I don't like watching TV and I don't really socialize much so I don't normally get the info on events. But with Twitter, I can keep informed.
  • I use Twitter for two reasons.

To promote my blog which gives insider travel tips to Vienna, Austria and discusses what it's really like to be an expat.

To scan information that I am interested in within seconds
  • I use Twitter for two reasons.

To promote my blog which gives insider tips about Vienna, Austria.

To get updated about things I want to know about in a few seconds.
  • I use twitter to promote my blog/music and to connect with other bloggers and faraway friends. I was pleasantly surprised that it's also a great tool for keeping up with news in various industries.

I tend to only follow/follow back folks I feel I have something in common with or people who tweet more than bland marketing messages -- someone who has a personality that is shown through their Tweets!
  • I use twitter as a sort of 6th sense to keep track of a small number of people that I already know in the real world.

I recently started a second twitter account to share quotes from Ralph Waldo Emerson: Emerson4theDay

I'm considering starting yet another twitter account to explore more if its networking possibilities.
  • I tweet to share my small business exploits with my retail customers, keep in touch with wholesale customers, make myself more accessible to potential customers, and to correspond with peers. Reading tweets expands my knowledge base and networking through Twitter has yielded marketing opportunities and sales. Phew, that's a lot! Thank you, Twitter!
  • I'm the Chief Communications Officer for Capital Area Michigan Works!, the local part of the Federal government programs working to connect job seekers and employers. I struggled to find a "reason" to tweet, and am now very excitedly posting actual jobs that come through our system, as well as job news, hiring announcements, articles, tips and events related to employment and the greater Lansing economy as @camwkate.
  • That's fantastic. What a great service to the community.
  • Sue
I am fairly new here, but want to connect with like minded ppl and increase my network for future goals
  • Im a week into tweeting.........so Im not all that sure how I will use it. But have been amazed at how everyone is using it. Hope to learn more as I go, make connections and learn from others, and share what little I know. :)
  • Paula
I am part of a group of Christians who use twitter as church....or Twurch, as we call it. We share troubles AND triumphs, and even though I have never met most of these people (we live on different continents!!), I feel like we share something very special. We share links to articles on faith, we share jokes, we share little bits of our lives.
  • Twurch. I love that! I'm gonna learn more. People who haven't experienced it don't understand the REAL connection you can have with people online who live miles and miles away - especially with a common bond like this.

for the Mr Tweet team, -C
  • My goal is only to entertain those who follow me, sometimes with my wit, but mostly with recounts of the stupid things I do and think.

I follow anyone who is interesting or entertaining.

I don't much like its use for conversing though. I care what someone thinks, not what they think of what I think.
  • I use Twitter as another tool to carry out our mission of educating and connecting social entrepreneurs. Social Edge is an online community for social entrepreneurs with thought-provoking and timely discussion, video interview, blogs by social entrepreneurs and experts, jobs and opportunities. I tweet information that helps social entrepreneurs start and scale their ventures, whether that be funding or competition deadlines, interesting quotes from discussions, or articles and blogs written by others in the field of social entrepreneurship that provide tactical, practical or insightful information for social entrepreneurs.
  • I also use Twitter to listen and hear issues that are timely and to keep up with all the new events and competitions so I can include them in the Social Edge opportunities and jobs section.

I see my job as providing a filter to the best and most actionable social entrepreneur content on twitter and beyond. Ideally, if I do my job well, @socialedge provides a "best of" social entrepreneur twitters through original and RTs of topical info.
  • Jill,

This is thoughtful and fascinating. Providing a trusted source that breaks through the information haze - that is a very good thing!

    For the MrTweet team, -C
  • Thanks C/MrT team- check out my recent post about how to Twitter for Social Entrepreneurship which goes into these topics in more detail:

To update facebook and stalk people.....just kidding
  • Good question. I posted recently about how I use twitter - < shameless plug > http://www.jasontoney.com/2009/03/getting-smart... < /shameless plug > but not the why.

I use twitter to maintain a sense of close connection with my friends around the world. I'm talking about more than casual acquaintances. Primarily these are people I know, know well, and consider to be important to my life -- and I'm invested in theirs.

Secondarily, twitter keeps me aware of the zeitgeist. It shows me what people I find interesting find interesting.

    Thirdly, it's just hella fun.
  • great use of "zeitgeist' :D and I'm a huge fan of shameless plugs.
  • I'm use Twitter for the entertainment value & finding new friends. I may post about my latest piece, but it is only 1 or 2 times to cover the various time zones of my friends. I don't like people who hawk their junk 24/7 or try to trick you into going to their site. The spammers/skanks ruin Twitter, just like they ruin all other forms of open communication.
  • Cindi S.
When I first signed on to Twitter, I intended to use it for professional use only. Now I use it for both professional and personal. Here's how:

Professional - I use Twitter to promote events and activities at the not-for-profit performing arts center where I work; to monitor social media, marketing, not-for-profit and public relations trends; to engage with experts in those fields and to engage with other professionals in those fields where I live.

Personal - I use Twitter to find book recommendations, keep up with hockey news and connect with people and organizations that love animals.
  • passepartout
I use Twitter to keep in touch with the buzz.. As a business type, I am hope to learn how to use it for business, too. I

I follow thought-leaders and people who follow me if they are interesting. And I always duck spam-follows. I prefer NOT to follow robo-tweets from entities other than people. It's the humans who make it interesting. Why make Twitter into an RSS feed?
  • I use to Twitter to keep in touch with astronomy and space news and to learn from others who share my same interests, like astrophotograpy and homeschooling.
  • Guest
I tweet to connect with like minded people who inspire me and hopefully I may do so in return.
  • My use for Twitter is to find people into techy type stuff. I also enjoy talking to other Mac users.
  • jamie
My goal is just to see what different people do in there day to day lives. I twitter to let people know the same.
  • My goal is to establish myself as a trusted commentator and consultant in social media. I also wish to get international USA and Europe speaking engagements. I use twitter to share knowledge and to some "personality" so as to be accessible and approachable.
  • My Goals: find good resources for web/graphic design
Who I follow: designers, news outlets, people I know IRL
When Do I follow back: I follow back most people whose tweets look interesting to me.
What do I retweet? I retweet things that I would find interesting and I hope my followers find interesting and useful as well.

Another question should be Why do you favorite something? I favorite something (usually a tweet with a link in it) because I would like to find it later and possibly add it to my delicious account. I'm using delicious to keep track of tips tricks and methods for web design.
  • Mr. Tweet - I mainly use twitter to connect with other designers/industry types who share resources, insight and good convo. I love to network, so twitter allows me to connect with so many people around the globe that otherwise I would never have a chance to talk to. I also love @DCTH and other chat groups, that brings people of similar industries together. I used to check about 20 blogs of interest, now I have them on twitter, so I an get posts much faster. I tag the ones I want to read and skip the ones that don't interest me.
Some of my network is local to Seattle filled with people I meet regularly. Mostly however, the network is global. Since I love to travel I can now shout out when I'm in another city/country to meet up with other designers when trotting the globe. Me likey!//
  • I just joined Twitter. I'm not sure in what capacity I am looking to use it yet. I am exploring and learning all about Twitter, there's alot out there associated with it. I am very intrigued so far with Twitter. I've not seen anything like this in the social networking arena like it. I like the social interaction of so far, great way to meet other people and network.
  • I use it to showcase my photos and stay in touch with people I am interested in.
  • Stasha
I started on Twitter as a way to have immediate contact with my friends. Then I met some of the local people and now I'm using it to expand my knowledge of social media and technical skills.
  • BillDrew
My Goals: to keep abreast of news and technology related to libraries. I also use it to connect with friends. To let others know about what I am doing. To experiment with social networking tools.

Who I follow: Others doing the same as me. See above.

When do I follow back: when Friends and those providing real content.

What do I ReTweet? Anything that is of interest to me.

My wishes for Twitter: Allow more than one Twitter account per e-mail address as I also need to use Twitter for my library and professional organization.

    Follow me at http://twitter.com/BillDrew4
  • I use twitter kinda like a diary to myself.. it's nice when people come in that share the same thoughts but equally happy if nobody does.. it's just nice to get them out of my head.. lol .. I like sharing ideas with other artists though also.. as that is what I do... it is good for opinions and critisism...
  • Sam
I enjoy using Twitter to follow people, organizations, and groups that interest me. It's also a fun way to keep in touch with friends and banter with people I would like to get to know better. Plus, networking never hurts, and Twitter is THE fastest, easiest way to do that!
  • Yvonne
I use Twitter to keep up with both real-life and online friends, and to learn more about the area that I just moved to. I tend to tweet very often during the day, and I look for people to follow who are similarly active. I also look for people with similar interests, who live close by, or who share good information - and not just links. I retweet things I find funny or relevant to the people who are following me. Since I have a few different "groups" of twitter friends, I especially retweet things that I think would be interesting from one group to another.
  • I use Twitter to post thought-provoking quotes, as well as useful info about organic skin care and going green.
  • I love Twitter because I enjoy meeting new people and finding others who I share similar passions or have some sort of affinity with. Facebook is more about the people I've met or know in the past or present (and is much more private), whereas Twitter allows me to meet new people that share common interests: Mac & iPhone lovers; those involved in the creative side of the web design industry; programmers, CEOs and project managers on the development side (especially those specializing in Drupal), strategic partners from SEO and the internet marketing side; graphic designers, copywriters, tech bloggers, etc... Apart from that I enjoy meeting people with similar interests in hockey, social media, humor and people who are interested in doing good in the world and helping others. In the 7 weeks since I've joined I've been able to meet some great people and begin friendships with people that I may not have had the chance to meet otherwise along with learning a ton of things because of the vast amounts of information that is on hand. I find myself daily sharing with friends who ask me about Twitter and am happy to do so as I've found it to be such a valuable tool.
  • Glenn,

Thanks for this response! I too was really amazed at how "connected" I felt in a short time as I began following folks and gaining new insights through Twitter.

For the Mr. Tweet team, -C
  • I use mine to mostly for updates for my site .
But i have evolved to making some friends on there .
  • Jim O
I use it to tweet my thoughts to the world. Since I am a Common man.
  • kcdivatia
i use twitter to talk to my friends and keep up with what they are doing during the day. we're all college students with very busy and hectic schedules so twitter lets us know what everyone is doing and keeps us up to date with whats going on around campus. its also a great way for us share news and articles
  • I'm still new to this whole thing but I've been finding Twitter an incredible source of news. I've got TwitterFox installed so every five minutes I get the breaking headlines from all over.

I was reading an article the other day about the absence of chat rooms on the Internet these days (anyone remember those?) and I find that Twitter has become sort of a replacement for that. I'm definitely "meeting" new people through Twitter (although I haven't taken any of it from Internet life to real life yet).

The other stuff I post is just whatever random thoughts are in my mind at the moment, mostly jokes, puns, or random quotes from Buffy or The Office :)
  • Lynn
I'm a newbie on twitter. Initially I hope to connect with people who share my enthusiasm for essential oils, while I'm working on my website. I've also found that it is a great way to connect to people who have similar personal interests. I am just now realizing what a wonderful tool that twitter is today, and can see that it will become a great resource in the future.
  • As a poker player I use twitter mainly for live tournament updates and short stories about my on the road adventures.

I follow a lot of poker players to take part in their "adventures" and updates. In addition I follow several people tweeting about the Web 2.0 world in general.
  • Annie
I originally joined twitter to find inspiration in my cooking. The more I used it, it became more mutual and social. Now, it's my outlet for random interesting facts, funny comments and frustrations, as well as a source of inspiration for the rest of my life and interests, be they the Lord Jesus, cooking, crafts, writing, green living, photography or sign language.
  • Vanessa Juarez
I use twitter to learn as much as I can. I try to grad info from all over the place and feel that it helps me expand my intrest.
  • Regan
I'm using twitter to practise Esperanto. I try to write in Esperanto and I read other tweets in that language, too. This is good as I live in a relatively small place with little opportunity to meet other Esperantists. It has lead me to some great websites and blogs that are also helping me. Hopefully, I help the others as well.
I like that Twittering can take only a tiny bit of my time so I have no excuse not to practise.
  • My Goals:
I use Twitter for no planned reason and with no goals - just aimlessly, because I want to see what it develops into. It is quite fascinating and the fact that you only have 140 characters means there's not much window dressing - just raw, naked people being who they are.

    Who I follow:
I started out with the news people I trust, then the comedians who could make me giggle with a one-liner and then followed some of the pople they follow and then decided I should shift from my 'comfort zone' of like-minded thinkers and follow some who are nothing like anyone I know about. Then there are the re-tweets that I like so I look to the original tweeter and follow them sometimes.

    When do i follow back?
I do not follow everyone back - not that I have that many followers. I only follow-back those who interest me ins some way shape or form.

    What do I ReTweet?
Stuff I feel is important in a news sense or funny things that are good for a laugh.

    Thoughts...
Twitter is evolving in a pliable way as it adapts to how the users... use it. Fascinating to see this and to be kept wondering at where it will all go.

Clearly an income stream will be required - not sure how that will come about? Perhaps a simple 'Tip Jar' feature would be a nice start - I would tip a little from time to time to thank those who keep the site going, for their hard work.

Would not like to see too much commercialisation of Twitter - but everyone has bills and staff to pay so we have to be realistic.

Will carry on watching the changing shape of the Twitter bubble.

    Namaste,
    Tina Louise

  • I use Twitter as a poetry journal and exercise, writing 140-character (or less) poems, at least one a day, or more when inspiration hits.

I'm already a published, multi-awarded poet (and in another life won awards for developing ebook software for handheld computers and smartphones), and songwriter, but Twitter provides different challenges and opportunities.

First of all, this is an exercise in metaphorical clarity in a compact form, and helps develop a discipline that is difficult to attain with longer literary forms.

Second, Twitter provides reach for a different audience, one more comfortable with the electronic word, different from an audience more comfortable with paper-based books.

Third, Twitter rounds out an ecosystem of social networks that I use - including Facebook and MySpace - to build and develop that audience.
  • We use Twitter to broadcast all the great accomplishments being made by Winthrop chemistry students and faculty and to provide a central repository to inform students on notable happenings in science across the planet
  • Trina
My goals for Twitter are that I can follow and connect with the experts in my field ( Learning and development and e-learning).

  • Mr. Tweet!
I definitely have changed my twitter usage reasons, since signing up.
I use twitter to connect with media moguls or really anyone involved with the fashion industry.
I am a male model freelancing out of Toronto Ontario, and twitter is a great resource to be able to follow designers, agents, stylists, photographers, models.... Etc. Etc. The list goes on and on.
Twitter has allowed me to come into contact with people I otherwise wouldn't have been able to communicate with.
    Twitter is amazing.
    Much more broad than facebook.

Twitter allows me to get out my daily frustrations. I follow people I know, tweeters in my geographic area or just people I've come across who make me laugh or think. I rarely retweet, but when I do it's to share a good link or an important piece of info.
  • TalonLardner
I do it for a very similar reason as you; Twitter helps me vent a bit, and if people follow me, that's cool with me. I don't retweet, but I am trying to interact more.
  • I am still working out what Twitter can really do, and i guess it will change as my business grows. I have to be mindful that my clients are a real mixture of families and education professionals. So I try to provide a representative mixture of information in my tweets, some giving an insight into the products we are developing in response to clients feedback, and some providing information and links to other sources.
I don't just want it to be a sales tool, that's a real turn off, which is why I provide the third party information when I find something worthwhile. But it is undoubtedly a great way to inform people of the services you provide without being in their face with sales emails or similar.
I have a widget in The Foodies Books' myspace page and this is a godsend as I on;y have to update my twitter information to reach most of my online audience. I will very likely also place a widget in my new website when it launches later this month.
I'm still learning and would welcome any tips, but so far it has been a positive experience.
  • I was convinced by @PeterdeKock to use this medium business related. I want people to know that I am there waiting to help with my knowledge. I want business people to get notice of my presence and eventually hire me.
The past weeks I got some interesting followers and found some interesting people to follow. People who offer interesting links or other valuable information like @jonathanmead or the fantastic films of @sdweathers and he is also the only person who call me by my real name - nice gesture.
I do not follow everyone. When a message comes in that there is another follower unfortunately it is mostly SPAM and I block those persons. Yesterday the first woman who is on the outlook so to speak contacted, also blocked that.
And than we reach the fun section of Twitter, there are nice people who serve the necessary laughter now and than like my favorite @sockington.

But in the first place it is business I am looking for. I do not have that much time to sit in front of my computer because I have my work too but I keep up twittering, hoping to get known and people go and read my blogs, hire me, come to me for help.

    Thanks for asking......
  • I use twitter to keep up with the people in my industry.
  • I use Twitter for lot a variety of purposes. I follow Food related folks, the newest tech gadgets and social app trends, Photography sites, Breaking news, Bus conversion topics, while keeping in touch with my friends and family. I like TweetDeck as my desktop app as it allows me to group my twepple, lets me use Twit Pic, and it is aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Time is a factor when you follow a lot of blogs. I use the Google Reader for going through these fast and if I feel I have something to share, I Twit that from Shareaholic and then It also goes to My Facebook page automatically for my friends not on Twitter. I can allow my Blip.fm Music selections to arrive on Twitter that are again are forwarded to Facebook. I find I spend very little time and can still have a life offline.

I also use Twitter to Broadcast my posts from my Blog. All in all Twitter is great for a guy like me that isn't a profound writer, yet still has something to say.

Thanks for your Blog Mr Tweet
  • Thanks for your continual service of providing helpful info.

I use Twitter for networking; meeting decision makers and program planners, and individuals who may be interested in my parenting services and products. Also, I hope to add value to my followers. Because I don't blog, (always thought it'd be a nova) I like the micro-blog ease of twitter.

Good Blog Mr. Tweet - I use twitter to get enlightened on my business efforts. Also fun to read all the tweets on whether about business or personal. The number following doesn't matter as much to me. Just want quality and I want to provide quality.
  • Hopeful to opening a new market For my Green Building Company.
  • I use twitter to keep tabs on various things, most importantly information relevant to my writing in politics. Bluntly, I'd been far to insulated up until now. I follow most the "usual suspects" like NPR, politicians, DailyKos folks, etc. Otherwise, unless I see absolutely no reason why I would want to keep up with someone (i.e., foreign language I don't know, or subject matter completely out of the realm of my curiosity) I follow whoever happens to follow me.
  • Captainslacko
I use Twitter to connect with people who are business builders on the internet and to share proven wealth building strategies with those who might be interested.

I am fairly new to twitter and still learning, and am amazed at the wealth of information available from those I follow. Too much to take in but I manage to glean some wisdom from the passing parade.

I live in Australia, so am often asleep when the twitter world is most active, I wake up to 100's of tweets arrived overnight. I have dowloaded Twhirl (you can google it) a great little tool for keeping up with tweets coming in.

We are currently building an awesome new business online and you can see details at http://www.freeNwealthy.com I also run http://www.captainslacko.com.

Look forward to tweeting with you

  • I use Twitter to help advanced English students see colloquial expressions in everday use. Twitter is also a great way to encourage them to use similar expressions in their own postings.
  • My goal is to bring randomness into the world.
  • terrimolina
I'm still trying to figure out the whole Twitter thing, but I'm hoping to network and find readers who'll enjoy my book/s.
  • I use it to keep in touch with my real life friends and blogfamily who are flung across the country.

I used to use it for raising my personal profile. But then my personal and professional worlds started to collide in potentially embarrassing and ugly ways.

As a result, I went private and limit those who follow to those I know offline.

I don't care if people I follow follow me back (unless I know them...then it bothers me a bit). I tweet up a storm, and respect that my style isn't for everyone. And I respect that what I have to say may not be relevant to everyone. But it keeps me connected to people who have become my extended family.

I would have to say for now, I'm using Twitter for discovery. After years of the face to face networking events, which by the way I thrived on, I now have a position that does not lend itself to that much time out of the office. But I am in a position to research and try new ways of attracting people to our company's health related products. So the threesome (Twitter, Linkedin, & Facebook) seemed an excellent first step.

I feel a little like I did when I attended my first huge business after hours event. Everyone already seemed to know the secret handshake and where to score the extra drink tickets and I'm just trying to remember my elevator speech. (yikes that was a flash back I don't want to remember)

I had the simple goal of giving away the 25 business cards in my right pocket (mine) and having 25 in my left. The next morning dump the info into my contact list and send out "Hey great to meet you" emails before I forgot all the details of the evening. From the 4 days of twittering and face book, I can tell I'm going to need bigger pockets and a better system.
  • Since everything I post to my site(s) = local, I post the answer of THIS question to Twitter: "What are you THINKING right now?" That's because I usually have lots of thoughts and usually THINK doing before doing something!

Most of my posts are worldly, not local. Also, sometimes I post major news before the associated twitter does (ie. Biden=VP, also I've posted earthquakes within a minute of them happening).

I can see companies all over the world using twitter for project updates....

I'm fairly new to Twitter, and am enjoying it immensely. There's a ton of interesting tidbits given by people from all over. I'm reading new quotes, finding articles and blogs I would never have otherwise discovered, and just basically expanding my view of the world.

I'm definitely in the learning mode at this point.
  • Michelle
I am using twitter to learn about new and interesting ideas for internet marketing, and the wonderful information that is out there to improve the world :)

I twitter for entertainment. I follow people whose posts are interesting. I am a quilter so most that I follow have a connection with quilting.
  • I use Twitter primarily as a means to promote my show, UC Radio and to keep up with my listeners.

I was following one of my idols to use this network (it's happy to seem to be interacting with ur idol, ya kno..) At first, I have no idea what's going on here, but hey now i love this social messaging utility!

The reason why I used Twitter? Hmm...not only to share my thought but also to interact with idols, to meet new friends from all over the world and to expand my network.

As a recent grad under this economy, I hope to establish a network to hopefully help me with my job searching.
  • I use Twitter as a microblog and prefer to follow people who use it the same way. I like to read tweets that take advantage of the 140-character space (you get 140 characters. Use them!). I don't follow people who tweet mostly 3 and 4 word posts.

I generally don't follow people who primarily reply. I have notifications set so I only see conversations if I follow both sides, so if most of your tweets start with @ I'll never see them. I prefer originality. That said, please do share links and RTs - just not Every time you post!

I don't care how often you post or how many you follow or how many follow you. I will read you if you're interesting. I want to get to know something about you from your tweets.

My post frequency vary from not at all to several times a day. While I'd love to do more, I have a day job I need to attend to. :-) I do read almost everything that comes past, eventually. My reader software captures and stores my tweet stream 24/7.

My Twitter "use and follow policy" (such as it is) is posted at http://cfcl.com/vlb/twelcome.php. Feel free to read, borrow, or share from it.

I use Twitter, to find and communicate with individuals interested in all things home and garden in Texas. And for my followers I post Daily tips on issues concerning home and garden information and link bait to the latest blog post from which they came from.

And on a more personal level, I love finding new things and being considered "In-the-know." I can think of no better way than hanging out on Twitter and seeing what everybody has for show and tell!

Thus they beauty of the give and take relationship, Twitter is so known for!

I twitter because I'm passionate about a lot of things (non-profits, international business, particularly in Cuba, L.A./Orange County nightlife and restaurants, politics) and its great to connect with people about these things and also get new prospectives on things I am interested in but don't have expertise (management, running your own business, social networks as marketing tools. I'd like to eventually to twitter meetups and evolve in this community.

I also like to share information about the culinary world and receive same, as well as the arts and lifestyle.

I use Twitter like a mini-blog to get a little of my personal and business self out there. Since my business is yoga and meditation, I wanted a way to give folks a way to connect with me in a personal way. I tweet about great classes I've attended, great teachers I admire, and classes I'm doing, my philosphy of teaching, and the cookies I just baked.

I also use it to connect with like-minded Twitterers. I appreciate all my followers, but don't follow-back unless I feel a connection with what they're putting out there.
  • Ooh. I've just gotten in to yoga this past year. I do a Simon Low-inspired yang sequence almost every day.

  • New to Tweeting & Facebook... As we have an historic Inn in WV, I'm obviously attempting to use both to (hopefuly) share what we have here- both the Inn & the cool stuff in our part of the so. WV mountains- w/people who are or might be interested in coming to stay, play, work &/or live here. And, as w/our 26-page(!) website & "We Live In The Country!" blog, to provide info & help to those who request it. But between our website, e-store, blog, Facebook, & now Twitter, I am now Permanently chained to the computer! UGH! >:-P

It's hard to read everything, listen to all and research much. With Twitter, I can keep up with a variety of knowledge mixed with a variety of opinions, news and minds.
  • My use for Twitter has evolved as well. Right now I'm using it to make friends (because I love meeting new people), and also to network. I recently dusted off an old movie script idea and realized if I ever get the thing made I could use Twitter to promote it, among other things.

But my favorite use for Twitter is putting my random thoughts out there and reading other people's random thoughts.
  • My use for Twitter is to do co-blogging and networking with like minded people.
I also use Twitter to autopost to Facebook from my blogs so that when I post unique
on my ViralWordpress it gets spread around.

I rank high on Google. I like Page #1 and plan to keep it that way.
Twitter has helped me along the way.

New to Twitter here (hello, fellow WVians!). Doing nothing useful or profitable with it at all--purely recreational.

For me it's a wordsmithing challenge to condense my day, or my current emotion, into the 140-character field, and to do so with meaningful real words, not IM-speak!

It's also a bit of a park bench. Other people-watchers will know what I mean: watching the world go by, one tweet at a time!

I also just discovered twittervision, which is an amazing app. I can waste some serious time just watching the world turn and tweet!
  • Thanks for this blog...and for Mr Twitter in general!

My use of twitter is for work (I'm responsible for Web technologies and web based media at Together, Working for Wellbeing):
1.spread the word about Together, a UK based community mental health charity
2.find others interested in Mental Health, society, the non profit world, the use of Web 2.0 for Service Users and for NFP organisations, web technologies
    3.share opinions, resources, tips
4.meet fellow twitterers at Twitter events
5.search Tweets for useful information for blogging/website building and other tasks

    I follow:
    1.other NFP's and related organisations
2.people who tweet about the topics listed above
3.people recommended to me by other Twitterers

    I re-tweet:
anything I find interesting and worth making sure it is read by as many people as possible

I hope this answers your question.

all the best to everybody participating to this blog :-)
  • TogetherUK,

Thanks for your response. Best of luck with Together, Working for Wellbeing!
  • My main objective for twitter is to network with like minded individuals who want to make this world a better place. I have two businesses that I would like to generate some cash, but I also have 16 years of physical fitness under my belt. Anyone who has the drive and desire to change themselves, I'm willing to help. To offer positive quotes and solid info to help others.
  • My primary use of Twitter is to make information available to people who might find it useful. I am a tax attorney. I have a 25 year-old son with autism. I draft special needs trusts. I present seminars for various non-profit organizations about tax information for people with disabilities, special needs trusts, guardianships, health care advanced directives, and so forth. Sometimes I get a little business from these seminars, but my main purposes are to impart information that may be useful and to meet and mingle with people.

I don't think there is one right way to use Twitter but there are plenty of wrong ways that drive me absolutely crazy. But I can talk about that on my blog not yours!

My criteria to follow someone are simple: 1) interesting or intriguing people, 2) folks who post useful information (but don't just RT other people's RTs-argh!), 3) fellow academics, 4) anyone from certain places (Portland, OR, New Jersey, countries other than U.S.). They don't need to follow me back, some people need to keep their following lists smaller (say 300-500).

I don't value Twitter because of one person or another or one Tweet or another. I look at my entire Tweetstream (I use the web) and I'm seeking diverse and interesting comments. They don't have to be profound they just have to be genuine, not too extreme & divisive, not just repeating other people's words (RT hell), and not trying to sell me someone or something. I'm looking for conversation and connection not to do business.

That's why, if I'm asked, I tell people that it's who you follow, not who follows you. You can only generate followers through scammy script, bot, Auto-following games but you can choose who you follow which means you can influence what you're reading and who you are interacting with. Carefully choose who you follow, ENGAGE with them (not just broadcasting), share of yourself and people will be attracted to you (if lots of followers is what you're looking for).

But stop me now because I could write a book of this topic.
  • Lisa
I live in Seattle, thousands of miles away from any of my immediate family members, so I use Twitter to get a glimpse of the daily lives of my mom and sister in Georgia and my sister-in-law in California. I love reading about how their day went or what they're watching on tv. It helps me feel more connected in a small way.
  • Andrea
I haven't fully decided yet what I'm using twitter for.

When I first joined a month or so ago it was for a bit of fun, yet since I realised there were so many useful tweeters it's become more or less a source of feeds so it's come in very handy for spotting useful info for work (a personal finance website in the UK)

I feel I'm not providing that much exciting content for my followers. For friends it's fine as they seem to be happily putting up with me talking about changing my daughter's nappies. Yet for people I don't know that's probably not what they want to hear.

As some have followed me having met me via work I assume they expect to hear me tweeting about work, which I don't do that often - I'm not used to that.

I also don't necessarily want to bleet on and on about work for those people that aren't following me for that, it starts to look a bit like "showing off" in my book (we're the UK's largest PF site and my boss is a TV presenter) but maybe that's just me.

This is a dilemma I'm going to have to address at some point soon.
  • I am using Twitter to build a brand by posting interesting links and information. Then, after re-branding is complete, I want to use Twitter to build my brand. What I'm finding, having been on Twitter for 2 weeks, is that I am learning more about other folks than I anticipated.

Twitter is taking the place of a newsletter which in my experience is slow, cumbersome, a lot of work and has delivery problems. Twitter on the other hand is to the point, immediate and everyone who follows will get my updates - which is mostly what I tweet about. I don't tweet about my personal stuff because I assume my visitors don't want to hear about my cat or my headache. For the same reason I feel that once or twice a day is plenty of tweets. I follow those who tweet about stuff that interests me and is relevant to my site, with lots of links. I'm pretty new, and still not sure exactly how twitter works, but I'm learning, and very happy to find Mr. Tweet - recommended by Mark Nunney in the Wordtracker newsletter.

I've met caring fellow writers and enjoy sharing the whole experience of the writer's journey, the joy, the angst, the process. I, too, announce new content on my blog, but I also like sharing writing gems and resources I discover along the way. I started using it as a topic in my monthly column for the Rocky Mtn Fiction Writers, and its use and scope surprised me. With the help of my Tweeter friends, I learn something new every day.

    Hi Mr. Tweet,
I am fairly new to Twitter, too, so am still discovering how to best use it.
First, I love new technology, and am curious to see how (this and other) new media will help me further my own development, both professionally and personally.
Second, I am a leadership coach and consultant, who has worked on my own or in collaboration with others for more than 20 years. My clients love me and refer me to others, for which I am grateful, and about which I am proud, because I believe it reflects the value I deliver to them. I am certain I will find, and connect with, future clients, collaborators, and cool folks.
Third, I am focusing on building my brand. I've recently published my first book, and am excited to find like-minded people to chatter with, people whose opinions I can either support, or influence (depending), and most important, leaders in organizations of all sizes. The more we share with one another, the better the chances we will help improve the overall quality of leadership, and help offset the "impending leadership shortage" (so widely written about these days).

I guess that about covers it for now. Oh, and did I say that it's just really fun to connect with interesting people? That's a key part of it, too.
  • Ariola
Hi, I'm not clear about my goals. I started using Tweeter as a communication tool. To learn and share in the areas that are of interest for me. Now, I'm thinking to maybe use it for business' marketing?
  • I am a film company and as we have finished our film and we are looking to get it in theaters I'm using Twitter to update the actors and crew about what we are doing and where and when they can see the show! • I've got a split personality on Twitter (took me 6 mths to figure out I should do this - I'm a bit stunned - haha). 1) My professional/networking profile to connect and contribute to tech, travel and tourism trends, and 2) -added later- a profile for my travel destination (my job).

Both profiles have a good balance of broadcasting & conversation, followers and followees, and are authentically 'me' but they each have very different personalities/content.

I think there is HUGE potential for destinations to connect to past, prospective and current visitors on Twitter. This sector will surely be the next big contributor to Twitter growth...
  • bayoffundy
I've ended up with a split personality on Twitter (something that took me 6 months to figure out...I'm a bit stunned...haha!). One profile for professional/network me to track and contribute to trends in travel, tourism and tech, and a 2nd profile (added since Xmas) to connect to people interested in my destination. The destination twitter is now feeding live into my 'old fashioned' website...content doesn't get any fresher than that!

Both profiles have a good balance of broadcast and conversation, followers and followees, etc. but they each have very different personalities. interestingly though, both are authentically 'me'.

I think that Twitter has HUGE potential for destinations seeking to connect to prospective, past and live visitors. Not many Canadian destinations using it (yet) but lots of travel agents. Growth of tourism&travel conversations on Twitter is/will contribute greatly to its growth and relevance to current non-twitterers. Who wouldn't want current and authentic travel tips, insider info, deals, destination trivia and live help when traveling?

How to get your kids through college is on everyone's mind. Our company goal is to comfortably get all of the kids through college without depleting their entire savings portfolio and quite frankly going broke. The families that get the most financial aid for college are the families that understand the financial aid process. We are here to educate and help in any way.

  • I'm new to twitter, just about a month. I joined to find people /moms like me that I could market my products to and help get exposure for my products. I see that Twitter will become much more than that. A networking and learning tool also. So many people with so much expertise. Still trying to fine tune just exactly how I find my target audience.
  • I started using Twitter not only to increase exposure of my art, but also to gain information on topics I wanted to know about, not what the media decides I want to know about..... I've met people from different walks of life, all with different pursuits, and yet there is enough of a common thread to open communication on mutually relevant topics. Not to mention the love of comedy on here.... Laugh? Big laughs.
And being the ever-expressive creature that I am, it's great to have a place to share a thought. I can share links to my profiles and sites, share information with others with few limits, and there's a certain degree of camaraderie in Twitter that comes from such informal messaging.

Hi Mr Tweet, fantastic blog. I joined twitter to promote a charity single that myself and a group of mums campaigned for. We got Chris Rea/Warners Bros to agree to re-release of Tell Me Theres A Heaven in memory of Baby P and all children whose lives have been lost to abuse. Proceeds from the download of this song go to the NSPCC to help protect those still at risk.
Our main aim is to honour this brave little soldier and others like him with this beautiful song and also to raise much needed funds for a great charity.
We had some national news coverage of this a week before the release, but since then... nothing. I have found a lot of lovely people including some celebs on twitter who been so kind to RT for us. I think this has made a big difference to our campaign.

  • My use of Mr. Tweet is to alert businesses as to how I can attract new clients for them, through publicity. Also, to let them know that we create Vodcasts as a value-added service to our retainer clients, at no additional cost.

I am interested in following small-medium sized construction companies and architects in general to know what the day to day issues are that we as an industry face. I'm new to the industry, in business development. Also, the ability to communicate with women in construction would be beneficial.
  • I Tweet so the unicorns stop stepping on my toes.
  • I use twitter for social interaction with people of similar interests and who I find interesting. I would love to search based on interests but also based on how often people tweet, how many followers they have and how many they follow. On the whole I want to follow people with no more than 200 followers with similar interests and regular tweets but not too many to clutter my steam. Possible? Nigel.
  • I liked this A LOT how are you going to go through all your many, many comments Mr. Tweet? We use Twitter to let people know about our Grand project:)

I use Twitter to follow my favourite comics who tweet to tell their fans when they've updated their strips. I also follow a few fan groups who run trivia and promotions like geek magazines, bloggers, or podcasters.
  • I use twitter to connect with like minded people (church, video, blogging)

  • I use it to get my blog out there, and to interact with others. It's far less time consuming than chat. I follow back everyone that follows me, even if it takes a few days to do so. I also follow the famous, cause one day, just maybe, they'll read me and I'll wind up on Oprah. It's a long shot, I know, but hey, dare to dream.
  • I'm still getting used to Twitter. It's fascinating. I use it for building business, socializing, and research. I am also bewildered at the number of Twitter Tools that have been created. They are giving iPhone apps a run for their money. =)

I think my biggest challenge on Twitter is getting the Gurus to answer a question. Even with a DM they are so overwhelmed as Twitter makes everyone so accessible. There should be a Twitter Guru.

    Learning as I go.
  • Hi, My reason for using Tweeter is I am new to the Santa Monica area and want to meet people in my area who are in need of my services. And to learn from other people in the small business arena
  • I use twitter to advocate, educate, and learn more about Autism. Learning the ropes has been fun. I love finding new people to follow. We are battling with the Oklahoma GOP over passing an insurance mandate for autism coverage and I hope to educate others on this issue as well. I enjoy the funny tweets, motivational tweets, and informational tweets. Looking forward to watching twitter grow! Thanks Mr. Tweet!
  • I"m using Twitter to help Build Government 2.0 and America 2.0, Inc. I founded America 2.0, Inc. and we're looking for more people who are like minded. President Obama has commtted to Government 2.0, using Web 2.0 to increase citizen participation, so we're participating like crazy. If we get enough like-minded participating democrats to join us, we can all achieve a New America, an America 2.0, Inc. www.america2inc.com for more.

Twitter Blogger; I tweet thoughts because the 140 count is a better format for me rather than a 'full' blog. I find that the short bursts work a lot better for me in conveying words that attempt to capture the flow of what spirituality is all about.
  • I have enjoyed the blog and followed the advise with interest. I am just not sure yet what twitter is for?
  • I am using Twitter to inform the public of a recurring LARGE-SCALE "symptoms pattern"...associated with Morgellons Disease. You (health products) marketing folk might be interested to hear that your products are being used in a 15 day cycle ...or did you know this fact already?! (((Indicitive of an underlying causal agent ;)
Morgellons is more widespread than you thought!
  • My uses for twitter?

    1. Just started a MLM business selling jewelry. Please buy from me, proceeds are paying for international adoption!

    2. Keep up with my friends - I hate talking on the phone. ;)
  • I use Twitter for two reasons:
1-to connect with people who might be interested in my writing, books or speaking.
2-who might be able to help me with research for articles, books, etc.

Basically, it would be great to have a large number of followers to notify when I have a book published and for sale or when I have a question about something and need an expert to answer that question.

Beyond that, I want to share and to help and to offer bits of wisdom, if I have any! What I do is offer practical spiritual, human potential and personal growth tools from a Jewish perspective, but they are relevant to people from all faiths and spiritual traditions. It's nice to be able to let more people know about my blogs and my work.

I am also involved in writing about boys in the dance world, so it's nice to connect with people on Twitter about that and to direct them to my blog.

Of course, it's nice to let agents and publishing professionals know about my work via Twitter.

And last, it's great to hook up with other writers and experts in the field of publishing, PR, marketing, etc. There are tons of great links and tips offered.

I love being one of the people to be putting out inspirational and helpful quotes as well.

I am a recruiter primarily focusing on the financial services sector but also I work with other firms as well.
I am using twitter to broaden my audience particularly in this market where we have a large number of people seeking out opportunities; my goal is to provide to my network on twitter access to positions as they hit my desk.

You'd be surprised at how many firms are hiring out there at the present moment, despite the doom and gloom we see on the TV and in the press. If you look back at my posting logs you will see on average a new position is coming through our agency every 2hrs or so. That does fluctuate I know today for example was a little bit down with only three jobs hitting the market, but they are three great jobs where clients are seeking to hire people i.e they are real and a candidate with the right experience for the position will get the job, hopefully one of ours and hopefully one sourced from my network of followers on twitter.

In essence my goal is real time jobs updates for people following me, access to those jobs and a faster more efficient search completion time for my clients.

I also make myself available to speak with anyone who is following me on twitter, discuss the market talk about your career, provide advice on your resume, positioning of yourself in the market etc all you have to do is call me 212 279 7777.

    Regards,

    Hi Mr. Tweet,
I started out using twitter just to socialize outside my immediate circle of friends but then I saw how I can use it for business. I am a real estate agent but I don't want to hawk my listings or stalk buyers, however I would like to build a local sphere of influence and network locally thru Twitter.
I do like to comment on news of the day, community events & what ever randomness I am thinking at the time.
I think it is very helpful when I need a question answered. I do find it hard to get local people to follow , it seems I get more people from Toronto or places that I have no connection to for work.
  • kim07825
i am using it to collaborate with other business owners, website developers, photographers, and also hoping to get some feedback from stars like miley cyrus and taylor swift whom might give helpful info for my 14 yo daughter who is great singer but has stage fright. I have not received any feedback from them yet.:) but all other reasons mentioned have been awesome.
  • Michelle
I just started with Twitter. I want to use it to help encourage positive global consciousness. Collectively working together Humanity can make a difference in the world we live in.

Of course I'll definately use it to follow things going on in the world, new tech coming out, and Knitting (because I am hopelessly addicted to it and buying yarn), but so much can be accomplished when people step out of their own paradigm and negativity and actually focus on solutions rather then the problem. Its all about choice.
  • We're hoping to draw more people to the good stuff in skateboarding, and to read our magazine about the good stuff in skateboarding via our website ... hopefully in a way that's more like friends talking to friends than it is robots mining for robot eyes.
  • I currently manage a twitter account for a program within a large non-profit organization. The Program's goal is to invest in and develop college students in such a way that provides them with the tools to own the problem of poverty in our world today, and potentially bring about change. We have two semester study abroad centers in Africa and Southeast Asia, and we are opening a 3rd in Latin America soon. Our goal is to have 120 college students every semester attending one of those centers, getting college credit for themselves, and, hopefully, seeing explicit ways they can address the issues of poverty. Twitter provides us with the ability to network with colleges, universities, student groups, students, and other "high impact" individuals to further spread our name and cast our vision.

  • Thanks for the great ideas and forum. My use of Twitter is twofold -- as a writer/reviewer, it's a fun challenge for me to fit in a meaningful review and/or insight in just 140 characters. Additionally, I try to cover items that are not generally well-known, and therefore I can introduce someone to something new rather than simply offer an opinion on a CD, film, book, etc. that they have likely already heard of and/or may already have experienced. The goal is to inspire and pique interest ...

I use Twitter to find out about how other people socialize and interact with one another. You never know what you can learn from others, unless your paying attention. People are fascinating. I think that is why we are all here, to learn from one another and grow.
  • I've only been on Twitter for a few months. At first I lurked, not sure what to make of this new world. My first objective was to let authors know about NorLightsPress. We're looking for great books to publish and promote. Gradually I'm doing this, but I've also come across such interesting people and information I'd never have found any other way. Last Sunday I attended a family dinner and just in passing asked if any of them knew about "Twitter." Most had heard about it but no one else had started using it, yet. It started an interesting conversation about social networking and bookmarking.

I'm a newbie to Twitter. My work is all about supporting inside customers, so I am not out to drum up more business, but I am out to find ways to improve what we do and share our own successes. Thus far, I am here to learn and to find and follow the best of the best. My organization does not all these kind of tools (social networking types) to be used at the office, so I must live and learn Twitter from home. Trying to figure out why are the "bad" parts that could hurt the internal network and then make the case to open some of these tools to our employees.
